I bet no one remembers zed cars? Heck, I only just remember it and I am old :)
Anyway, in the theme of not always posting about Microsoft/Open AI, I thought I would write about some new RUST news (Rust the language that is!).
Ironically, there is a slight Microsoft twist here - apparently Microsoft are looking for Rust developers to re-develop some core software, and the guy who create the Zed IDE was also responsible for creating the Atom editor and Electron (used by VS Code - actually Electron has been used by thousands if not millions of apps. I did do a Just Five Mins on this ages back if you want a listen).
So, back to Zed (the editor). Zed is in early stages but is an editor primarily for the Rust language and it is itself written in Rust which is open source. The UI uses some components called GPUI.
At the moment, and again it is early days, the main language support is of course Rust but it does seem more languages will be supported as the project moves on.
Currently one limitation for some is the early release is only available for Mac’s… but given the github issue entries, it does look like there is a lot of asks for Windows and Linux. Given Nathan Sobo, who created Zed, also created Electron and the Atom Editor, you can’t help feel the cross platform aspect to Zed will be firmly on the roadmap.
If your IDE becomes a little too rusty, give me a shout, I have plenty of WD-40 :)
